2020: Memories, lessons and reminders from the long road

It’s been an incredible year. Believe it or not, we’ve been on this COVID, political, election, economical journey for nearly a year! For most of us, it all started in March 2020, and it’s been a winding road complete with detours, speed bumps, roadblocks and plenty of pitstops.
Here are a few things I’ve learned from the journey.
  1. Do it scared! If it’s on your to-do list, take a step of faith. Do it scared!
  2. Don’t quit! Don’t give up! As Jimmy V said years ago: “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up!”
  3. Listen more, talk less.
  4. Actions follow beliefs.
  5. 3 things we can control: Actions. Reactions. Mindset. You can’t control the rest of the stuff — or anyone else — so stop trying.
  6. Glance back, but focus forward!
  7. Silence is a powerful tool.
  8. Less is more!
  9. Going slow is better than throwing it up against the side of the barn.
  10. Priorities matter! What are yours?
  11. Don’t get distracted from the important things. You can underline and highlight this one!
  12. Needy is creepy.
  13. Don’t wait to be ready. You’re ready. Take the first step. Face it: You’ll never be ready! (See #1!)
  14. It’s okay to tell someone “no”.
  15. Don’t even get me started on the media, Congress or the political state of affairs. Suffice it to say that both of these so-called institutions (maybe that is the right word!) are the least trusted in America today.
  16. It pays to have a six-month stash of cash on hand. Just like Dave Ramsey said.
  17. Confirmed: Common sense isn’t so common anymore.
  18. Good is good, but great is better. There is only a one-degree difference from 211° and boiling water.
  19. Friends are created in conversation, not in texts or on Facebook. Have a conversation!
  20. Control the controllable. Don’t sweat the rest of it. You can’t do anything about it anyway.
  21. Find out what everyone else is doing, then do the opposite.
  22. Don’t follow the crowd, blaze a different trail.
  23. Haircuts are overrated.
  24. They may tell you differently, but people are legitimately scared and hurting right now. What can you do about to help someone today?
  25. Three weeks to the gallon is excellent for your budget!
  26. I’m reworking my “what is important” list. A lot of stuff that was on that list in January 2020 is gone.
  27. It’s no truer today than this time last year, but God is real, He still moves and He still speaks. Listen with spiritual eyes and spiritual ears. There’s a world of difference!
  28. Clear out the clutter: From your garage, from your brain, from your life.
  29. I need to get better so I can help other people get better.
  30. There aren’t as many adults in the room as I once thought.
  31. Opinions and agendas are the new facts and reality. Don’t believe everything you hear or read.
  32. Enjoy the ride! If you don’t enjoy it, you will never be great at it! Enjoy the ride!
  33. God is more interested in who we are becoming that what we are accomplishing.
  34. SLOW DOWN. Oh, wait, already mentioned above. Added here for emphasis.
  35. It’s not about me, it’s about their dreams.
  36. Be bold! Say something to your friends or family that no one else would dare say. (But be nice and respectful).
  37. Be quiet and listen. Indeed, silence can be golden!
  38. Remember who you are. When you do, your goals and road map will become clear.
  39. Be you! Everyone else is taken already!
  40. Finally, God knows, and He understands your dilemma. He’s mad, He’s frustrated too. He’s cried over it, and He will address it.
What did you learn in 2020?
