Heart dance: What makes you come alive?

“Do not ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” ~~Howard Thurman

Maybe it’s sitting on the swing and looking out over God’s creation. Maybe it’s a walk along the river or lake. Perhaps someone special makes your heart dance. Or serving. Or planning an upcoming trip, a good book or spending time with a friend.

Whatever makes your heart dance is what fills your tank, what gives you peace and joy, and often it’s that place from which your purpose in life emanates.

Have you ever just been sitting in a room among people and started to smile by thinking of something? Perhaps it was just an event that made you happy, or a special person you were thinking about, or perhaps a dream. Then, ever so suddenly, you “awaken” and realize that others have noticed you smiling because your heart is dancing, and you failed to keep it “inside”? Your happy little secret is out! And it becomes contagious, people become curious and they want what you have!

Dancing with your feet is great and it brings happiness. But when your heart dances, there is joy, peace, satisfaction and victory! And it spreads.

In our hectic, crazy schedule it’s easy to say “I don’t have time” or “Gotta do this or that” and we often forget or just don’t allow our hearts to dance. We keep it tucked away, hidden deep inside, fearful of showing our real self.

But it’s in those deep recesses of your heart — behind doors that perhaps haven’t been opened in decades — where you’ll dance your heart out. It is where you will find the joy unspeakable full of glory, and it’s where you will find and hear that still, small voice.

What makes your heart dance? Think about it. Really. Do you know what it is? Not just what makes you happy, but what makes your heart do flip-flops and flutter. Not just something you enjoy doing, but what makes you want to just stand up and shout!

Granted, God has each of us where we are for a reason, but KNOWING and recognizing what makes your heart dance means you are already halfway there. And it’s true in every facet of our lives.

“Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” ~~Mark Twain.

Learning what makes your heart dance is living and finding the desires of our heart, not just existing. It’s a journey toward a future and a hope rather than tip-toeing through a mine field of mundane checklists. Letting go and allowing your heart to dance is not about listening to the drum beat of the world, but hearing the music that no one else can hear. The music that causes your heart to come alive!

Today — right now — listen to your heart, hear the music it’s playing, and allow your heart to dance. You’ll smile…then, others around you will smile too. After all, if not today, when?

The Bible doesn’t promise us tomorrow. Don’t go another minute without allowing your heart to dance with freedom. With joy. With overcoming victory.

“…because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
