Choose wisely: You get what you look for

The more I get to know people,
the more I realize why Noah only allowed animals on the boat.

You attract what you want. You get what you look for. You will generally look for people like you, so if you want to change the people you attract, look in the mirror: change yourself first.

In other words, the people you attract reveal much about your habits, personality, and mindset. Could you let that sink in? If you want to change your circle, you may need to change yourself, or at least how you look at life.
  • Gossips attract other gossips.
  • Negative people attract negative people.
  • Happy people attract happy people.
  • Successful people attract successful people.
  • Lazy people attract lazy people.
It’s the same with fear, hurt, hope, honesty, creativity, ambition, and other character traits.
So which comes first: Surrounding yourself with the right people or changing yourself to attract the right people? Actually, they go hand-in-hand, especially if you are aware of your need or desire for change. The first step, however, may be recognizing the need to change your thoughts and eliminate limiting beliefs, negative influences, and self-doubt. But you can also adjust the caliber of people in your circle.

People will influence your mindset, so discipline plays a huge role in changing your mood if you aren’t necessarily motivated. You become what you read, listen to/watch, and the people you surround yourself with.

Ken Coleman says, “The sad reality is that most people never live the life they want because they are more comfortable doing what it takes to fit in than doing what it takes to stand out. We care too much about the approval of people who couldn’t care less about your dreams.”

“More comfortable” refers to your mindset. Get out of your comfort zone and change your circle, change your future, and change your life.

If you’re looking for something to change in 2024, here’s a great place to start—the people around you. You can change your perspective, affirmations, job, and habits, but if you don’t shuffle the deck of your inner circle, you may still find yourself stuck in a rut in ’24.

Why? Because the people around you will determine your trajectory in life. Put simply, people will hold you back, drag you down, or they will encourage you and push you to the next level.

If you want to change your life and future, you can start by changing your circle and making solid choices.

  • Choose people who are good for your mental health.
  • Choose people who respect your boundaries.
  • Choose people who will be honest with you and hold you accountable.
  • Choose people who continually push you to grow.
  • Choose people who don’t judge you based on your worst days.
  • Choose people who choose not only your present but also your future.
Surround yourself with people who are ahead of you and more innovative than you. Smart people make you smarter. Creative people will breed creativity. People who are ahead of you in some capacity will bring you to their level. They spark interest and introduce you to new viewpoints, ideas, people, and places. They will help you grow in every area of your life.

John Wooden says, “You will never outperform your inner circle.” And you can’t improve your inner circle without changing your perspective. If you want to improve yourself, live happier and more peacefully, worry less, and grow mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, change how you look at life and start to change the circle of people around you.

You have to take the first step — what will it be? Choose wisely.
