Election Frenzy: The Search for Peace in the Frenzy

Well, we’re here. Election Day 2020. The campaigning is over, but be sure the craziness won’t end when the polls close tonight. But you can have peace in the frenzy.

Despite the ups and downs of 2020, more than 55% of Americans call today the most stressful day of their lives. Moreover, the same survey indicates that 95% of those polled believe the events of 2020 have impacted their mental and physical health negatively.

Whether you’re a part of the 55% or the 95%, the rhetoric, activity and emotion around the election have created division and conflict in families, businesses, churches and homes. The schism can be seen among people who have never experienced separation or disconnect before. Good friends aren’t talking, brother has disowned brother, and it’s not safe to talk politics or religion in the workplace, the gym or the kitchen table.

Looking to put things in perspective. Here’s a good read from pastor Tony Evans about how we got here.

Remember, we live in chaotic times. The world probably won’t come to an end today or tomorrow, but the signs are evident that everything we hear or see is not the truth. Moreover, the turbulence and upheaval will likely not end either. If you want the latest “news”, turn off CNN, Fox and MSNBC. Here are the facts about today.

  • They will call evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20).
  • Sin will abound, and people will grow cold (Matthew 24:12).
  • People will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive…not loving good, treacherous, reckless (2 Timothy 3:1-17).
  • Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. (Matthew 7:15)

So, if you are among the 55% who call Election Day the biggest stress of your life — or even if it’s just another big stressor for you — here are a few tips about navigating the day and the events over the next 24-48 hours and at least decrease the stress on Election Day 2020.

  • Start your day with an anchor. Read your Bible and a devotion to start your day. Stay close to the truth and reality.
  • Get the tough things out of the way first. In other words, don’t procrastinate! If it was on your list yesterday or the day before or even last week, just do it now! Don’t put those stressful things off for later in the day.
  • Find time for you and just take a breath! You have to set this time aside and be deliberate about it, or you just won’t do it! It’s essential, if not critical! Read, draw, reflect, meditate, walk or simply watch a sunset!
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff. Don’t minimize the outcome to America, but the election is small stuff in God’s big picture.
  • Maintain truth and integrity. Remember, as for me and my house… That is what you are responsible for, that is what you will give account for.
  • Don’t isolate yourself. Make a phone call to someone who will encourage you or build you up.
  • If you must watch the returns, don’t keep sharp objects close by and promise not to throw anything at the TV.

I have it on good authority that the sun will come up Wednesday. The circumstances didn’t sneak up on God, He is not surprised or caught off guard, and his plan is on track. Take a deep breath, have a brownie and watch the rest of the world go nuts while you enjoy the ride!
