Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God. ~Corrie ten Boom
We don’t like uncertainty. It makes us uncomfortable, restless—sometimes even afraid. We crave clarity, predictability, and a roadmap that tells us exactly where we’re going. But what if uncertainty isn’t something to fear but something to embrace?
The Power of Uncertainty.
Think about the most pivotal moments in your life. How many of them came with a perfectly laid-out plan? Chances are, the most meaningful shifts—the career change, the unexpected opportunity, the deepened faith—emerged from seasons of not knowing. Of waiting. Of stepping forward without a guarantee.
I’ve walked through many seasons of uncertainty. I’ve left a job without another one lined up and wondered, ‘What’s next?’ I’ve faced loss and the challenge of starting over in a new place. But one of the hardest moments of uncertainty was sitting in a hospital waiting room while my wife underwent surgery to have a kidney removed. As life outside carried on—people chatting, checking their phones, going about their day—I felt frozen in the unknown, my mind racing with ‘what ifs.’
Worry and fear always tried to take over. Some days, they did. But I couldn’t let them win the war. I had to remind myself that uncertainty wasn’t the end of the story—it was a chapter still being written. And in those moments, faith became my anchor.
Faith in the Waiting.
Daniel waited 21 days, praying without answers. He didn’t realize that, all along, God was working in the heavenlies on his behalf. Joseph spent 13 years in uncertainty—betrayed, imprisoned, forgotten—before stepping into his destiny. How many nights did he wonder if God had abandoned him? Even Jesus spent 30 years preparing before stepping into His purpose. Imagine knowing you are called to change the world yet waiting decades before the time is right.
The in-between seasons may feel like silence, but they are often preparation for what’s next.
We tend to see uncertainty as an obstacle. But what if it’s actually an invitation? An invitation to trust, grow, release control, and lean into something greater than ourselves.
Certainty can be a prison, keeping us locked in the familiar—unwilling to risk, hesitant to dream.
But uncertainty? It opens doors we never would have knocked on. It forces us to pay attention, to seek wisdom, and to rely on faith over formulas.
If you’re in an uncertain season, take heart. You are not lost. You are being led. The unknown may be the space where something new—something better—is waiting to unfold.
How to Open the Gift of Uncertainty.
Uncertainty isn’t easy, but it doesn’t have to paralyze you. Here are five steps to navigate the unknown with wisdom and faith:
- Pause Before You Panic. When uncertainty hits, our instinct is to react out of emotion. Instead, take a breath. Before making a decision, allow space for reflection and prayer.
- Seek God’s Perspective. What if uncertainty isn’t a roadblock but an opportunity? Spend some quiet time and ask, What is God teaching me in this season?
- Take the Next Wisest Step. You may not see the whole path, but you don’t need to. Focus on the next faithful step, trusting that clarity will come as you move forward.
- Surround Yourself with Wisdom. Seek counsel from mentors, friends, and those who have walked a similar path. Uncertainty feels lighter when you don’t carry it alone.
- Embrace the Process. Waiting isn’t wasted when it deepens your faith, patience, and resilience. Trust that what feels uncertain now may one day be the very story of how God led you somewhere unexpected.
A Final Invitation.
Could you take a moment to reflect? What uncertainty are you facing right now? What if, instead of fearing it, you saw it as an invitation—an opportunity to trust, to grow, to step forward even when the path isn’t clear?
Grab a journal or take a quiet moment and ask yourself:
- What might God be preparing me for in this season?
- Where have I seen God’s faithfulness in past seasons of uncertainty? How might that shape my trust in this one?
- What would it look like to surrender control and embrace this season with open hands instead of clenched fists?
- What is the wisest next step I can take today?
Uncertainty isn’t a problem to solve—it’s a journey to walk. Step by step, you’ll discover that the unknown isn’t empty. It’s full of possibility. Trust that today’s uncertainty may be the beginning of your next great chapter.
