Life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect them. Difficult relationships, unexpected challenges, circumstances beyond our influence.
These things can leave us feeling powerless and overwhelmed. But here’s the truth: While you can’t control everything that happens to you, God has given you authority over specific areas that determine your peace, growth, and influence.
Control what you can control. And leave the rest to God…or at least let everyone else deal with it!
As Proverbs 4:23 reminds us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” How we steward what’s in our control makes all the difference.
I’ve identified the six areas where most temptations will arise, the times we try to step outside of areas we can control. See if you agree.
1. Your Attitude. Romans 12:2 calls us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” When you’re surrounded by draining or discouraging people, you have a choice. You can’t always choose your circumstances, but you can always choose how you respond to them. Will you bring peace, confidence, and joy into difficult situations, or will you let negativity define your response?
2. Your Time. Psalm 90:12 teaches us to “number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Take an honest look at your calendar. If someone examined how you spend your time, would they see your calling or your distractions? Time is your most valuable resource—invest it wisely in what serves your growth and purpose.
3. Your Priorities. Matthew 6:33 instructs us to “seek first the kingdom of God.” In our busy world, it’s easy to give attention to urgent but unimportant things. Ask yourself: what’s consuming your attention right now that won’t matter a year from now? Realigning your priorities with God’s truth creates clarity and direction.
4. Your Potential. Paul encourages Timothy to “fan into flame the gift of God that is in you” (2 Timothy 1:6). Where have you been playing small because of others’ opinions or external pressure? God gave you unique gifts and abilities. The question is: are you polishing them or letting them collect dust?
5. Your Passion. Colossians 3:23 reminds us that “whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.” What ignites you? What dreams have you let slide because no one supported them? Stop waiting for someone else to light your fire—God already gave you the match.
6. Your Circle. You’ve heard me say it often: Everyone needs a people. Ephesians 4:1 calls us to “live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” The people you surround yourself with will either push you toward your calling or pull you away from it. Does your current circle of friends, family, and co-workers help you walk in your calling, or do they create hesitation and doubt?
Here’s the challenge for you.
Of these six areas, which one would create the biggest ripple effect in your life if you focused on it this week? Choose one specific, actionable step you can take. Remember, God has entrusted these areas to your care. No one else can steward them for you.
Focus on what you can control. And don’t get bogged down with the rest. You can’t do anything about it anyway!
