Jon Gordon’s The Energy Bus lays out ten powerful rules for creating a life and business fueled by purpose, positivity, and momentum. These principles are a guide to taking control of your journey, surrounding yourself with the right people, and keeping your energy focused on what truly matters. But understanding the rules is just the beginning—applying them with intention is what truly makes a difference.

That’s where this expanded perspective comes in. I’ve built upon these rules to give you a roadmap and a clear path forward. These insights will help you take ownership of your life, clarify your vision, and create the energy that attracts the right people and opportunities. If you commit to these principles, you won’t just go through the motions—you’ll move with purpose, direction, and impact.

1. You’re the driver of your bus.

It’s your life and business, so own it. You can only make a difference by being different. Drive your bus on your journey in your lane. If you do, you’ll see things you have never seen before. No one else can steer your destiny. God has given you unique gifts—don’t be afraid to step into them with boldness.
“You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself.” ~Jim Rohn

2. Desire, vision, and focus move your bus in the right direction.

Goals are great, but desire, vision, and focus are the fuel that ignites your journey. Your identity is critical, so find out who you are. Clarity of purpose creates momentum. When your vision aligns with God’s purpose for your life, doors will open in ways you never expected.
“Dream big. Start small. But most of all, start.” ~Mark Batterson

3. Fuel your ride with positive energy.

It’s easy to get sucked in by the Negative Nellies and Debbie Downers, but if you shift your perspective just a tiny bit, you’ll see a dramatic change in your life. Instead of looking for what’s wrong, focus on what’s right! You get what you look for! Scripture reminds us, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right…think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).

4. Invite people on your bus and share your vision for the road ahead.

Be ruthless with this one because it could be a defining moment. Not everyone should have a seat on your bus. Community is pivotal and decisive. Surround yourself with people who believe in where you’re going. Jesus surrounded Himself with disciples who shared His vision—choose wisely who walks with you.
“Surround yourself with those who see greatness within you, even when you don’t see it yourself.” ~John Mason

5. Don’t waste your energy on those who don’t get on your bus.

Don’t chase people. Attract them by creating your future. When you’re clear about your purpose, the right people will show up at the right time. Don’t waste your time on others who don’t share your values and goals or who aren’t like-minded.
“When the right people come into your life, they don’t complete you, they compliment you.” ~John Maxwell

6. Post a sign that says NO ENERGY VAMPIRES ALLOWED on your bus.

Create boundaries and put people on notice that you will not put up with shenanigans and nonsense. Don’t allow people to suck the life out of you! Negative people will drain your passion if you let them. Even Jesus sometimes stepped away from crowds to recharge—protect your peace.
“Never let someone who has done nothing tell you how to do anything.” ~Jon Gordon

7. Enthusiasm attracts more passengers and energizes them during the ride.

Be excited about your journey. No one else will be excited if you can’t get excited about it. Energy is contagious—make sure you’re spreading the kind that lifts people up. A joyful heart is like a light on a hill—when you shine, others can’t help but be drawn in.
“People may hear your words, but they feel your attitude.” ~John Maxwell

8. Love your passengers.

It’s about quality time, so invest in the people that come alongside you. People don’t just want to be led; they want to be valued. Show them they matter. Love isn’t just a feeling; it’s an action. Stop long enough to serve those on your journey with kindness and grace.
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”~Zig Ziglar

9. Drive with purpose.

As Zig Ziglar would say, don’t be a wandering generality; be a meaningful specific. Be intentional with your words, actions, and deeds because these are the things you can control. When you align your purpose with God’s plan, you won’t just chase success—you’ll live with significance.
“When you stop chasing the wrong things, you give the right things a chance to catch you.” ~John Mason

10. Have fun and enjoy the ride.

It’s time to throw your stress out the window and have fun. Whatever you call it—let your hair down, relax, and smell the roses—enjoy the process. Life’s too short to spend it dreading the journey. Live it fully and abundantly–without regret.
“Don’t take yourself too seriously. Take your work seriously, but not yourself.”~John Wooden

Enjoy the Ride.

At the end of the day, life is too short to be stressed, surrounded by the wrong people, or drained by negativity. If you take control of your journey, protect your energy, and surround yourself with the right people, you’ll not only reach your destination—you’ll enjoy the ride. So, as you move forward, remember this: the journey isn’t just about reaching a goal. It’s about embracing the process, finding joy in the moment, and making an impact along the way. Trust the path God has you on, and know that every mile has a purpose. Buckle up, stay focused, and make every mile count.
