Make today so awesome that yesterday gets jealous!

A friend of mine in Louisiana posted that quote on Instagram recently and it struck a chord. Thanks, Charlie Waltman! I’ve researched the origin — who said it first — but don’t seem to find anything definitive.

You have 86,400 seconds today. Ready. Set. Go.

That seems like a long time, but when you realize the clock is continually ticking, whether you’re reading this blog, washing clothes, running the kids to practice or playing on Facebook, taking a nap, playing video games or watching TV, you quickly grasp the fact that, indeed, time is of the essence.

That doesn’t mean you have to rush through your day, hurrying to check off a list or trying to jam everything into those 86,400 seconds. But it should mean that you prioritize that list to ensure that important items are on the top.

It’s not about doing things, it’s about doing meaningful things. It’s not about checking off a list, it’s more about becoming intentional. It’s not about getting everything done, it’s about changing your life.

Make today awesome!

The clock is ticking. What will you do with it? John Maxwell says: “To change your life, you need to change your priorities.”

Indeed, you are responsible for the next 86,400 seconds of your life. No one else is responsible for your 86,400. So what will you do with them? Think about a person who is living the good life, you know, the one you’d like to be living? The only difference is what you do with your 86,400 seconds each day. They make choices each day, just like you. They choose priorities each day, and they set boundaries each day. Just like you.

“It’s worth making time to find the things that really stir your soul. That’s what makes you really feel alive. You have to say ‘no’ to other things you’re used to, and do it with all your heart.” ~ Roy T. Bennett

It’s all about choices and priorities. Sure, you have to go to the grocery store, you have to get that haircut, you have to pick up the kids at school. But what you do with the remaining seconds, minutes and hours will determine whether yesterday is jealous.

Be intentional. Be purposeful. Be focused.

It serves as a good reminder: Tomorrow hasn’t arrived and yesterday is clearly gone, so neither of those really matter, do they? There is absolutely nothing you can do to change yesterday, and you can’t do anything about tomorrow, but you can change now.

Because, as you know, we don’t have the promise of tomorrow. In fact, the Bible says we are “…just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.”

What you do today may determine your tomorrow, but it will definitely create your past and leave an indelible snapshot of a moment in time of your life.

If you listen for that still, small voice of God, today will be magnificent and you will make a difference. Because, at the end of this day, it’s one of the most important questions you can ask yourself: What did I do with those last 86,400 seconds called “today”?

Go ahead and dare to make a difference! Dare to change some priorities. Dare to be you. Dare to say “no” to things you’re used to.

You’ve heard famed basketball coach John Wooden encourage you to make today your masterpiece! Make today so awesome it makes yesterday jealous!

“Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” ~Mother Theresa
