Your obedience may be someone’s miracle

“If you do the little things like they’re big things,
God will do big things like they’re little things.” ~Mark Batterson.

It doesn’t take much to lay the groundwork for a miracle.

David had a sling, Moses had a staff, Sampson had a jawbone, the widow had a mite, a boy had two fishes and five loaves, Gideon had 300 soldiers in the face of thousands. Then, there’s the cloud the size of a man’s hand (1 Kings 18:44), the sparrow (Matthew 10:29-31) and, of course, that mustard seed (Matthew 13:32).

And God did the rest.

The same is true in your life. When you take the first step, plant the seed and follow the heart of God, little can be much.

It may seem trivial or small, but small things make a big splash. Just like a small match can set off a huge wildfire, so too can your small act of obedience to a small voice in your head turn into a sparking miracle.

Have you ever heard that voice that says:

  • Stop and talk to that person.
  • Send them a card or a note.
  • Smile at them.
  • Take a minute and say “hello”.
  • Buy them a cup of coffee.
  • Stop what you’re doing and call them.
  • Reschedule this meeting and go do that.

People are hurting all around you. They may smile and say, “It’s okay”,, but they are discouraged, defeated, and they are looking for someone to encourage them and give them hope. Your small step and obedience to that still small voice can set up God for a great miracle.

There’s an old song we sang in the youth choir at First Baptist Church in Natchitoches. Pass It On still rings in my mind today, and occasionally I’ll hum it. But it’s forever embedded in my memory.

It only takes a spark to get a fire going.
And soon, all those around can warm up in its glowing.

You have an opportunity to be an Encourager-in-Chief today. You have the opportunity to plant a seed. Don’t try to find the time. Make time today.

Your small obedience may be someone else’s life-changing miracle. Be the spark that lights the fire.

  1. I absolutely love this! Our parents taught us that sometimes the smallest things we can do for someone makes the most difference! Cards, cookies, phone calls. Just being nice! A smile and greeting. Saying their name.
